The data types TEXT, NTEXT and IMAGE have been replaced by VARCHAR(MAX), NVARCHAR(MAX) and VARBINARY(MAX). We intend to develop unicode based applications using the packing code SW* for text. To get a good performance also with few text data (< 8 kByte, no LOB reads) and to avoid unnecessary administration work in case of changing the data tape from ntext to nvarchar(max), we prefer the new data types. That implies that the MSS driver have to be adjusted to these data types.

Use Case

If the developer chooses the packing code SW* the create tabe function generates nvarchar(MAX).

Studies on performance show that the new data types are much better than the elder one.
